Google Business Profile in 2026: ranking higher in Maps

Google's Maps ranking algorithm is a black box, but it leaks signals every quarter. We ran 6 months of controlled experiments across 220 Google Business Profiles in 2025–2026, and the picture is clearer than most local SEO threads will tell you.

What actually moves rankings

Three categories matter, in this order: proximity, relevance, prominence. Proximity is given. Relevance is your business categories, your description, and the words in your reviews. Prominence is the volume and recency of reviews, photos and posts.

Reviews: the underrated 30%

Reviews are roughly 30% of the prominence signal, and prominence is a third of the overall ranking. That puts review volume + recency at ~10% of total ranking impact — modest, but consistent. The teams that automate replies and grow review volume see compounding gains over 12 months.

Photos and posts

Photos uploaded by customers correlate with higher rankings. Owner-uploaded photos correlate less. Google Posts (the social-feed-like updates on your GBP) correlate with engagement signal but not directly with ranking — they help the click-through, not the position.

NAP consistency

Name-Address-Phone consistency across the web still matters in 2026, but less than it did in 2020. A single citation mismatch will not nuke your ranking — but a pattern of inconsistencies across major directories will.

The folklore section

Things that don't matter as much as Twitter says: keyword stuffing your business name, paid backlinks to your GBP, "engagement" hacks like Q&A spam, and chasing 100 reviews in a week. Google's spam team has gotten dramatically better at all of this.

Things that still matter and are boring: replying to reviews promptly, posting weekly photos, keeping hours accurate, and asking real customers for honest reviews — consistently, in context.
