AI

Does AI-generated review responses hurt your ranking? What we tested.

When AI-drafted review replies became viable in 2023, the first question every local SEO consultant asked was: "Will Google penalize this?" Three years on, we have data — a 6-month controlled experiment across 220 Google Business Profiles in seven verticals.

Experiment design

Two cohorts, matched by review volume and starting rating. Cohort A: AI-drafted replies, human-approved before sending, 95% coverage. Cohort B: manual replies, ad-hoc, ~40% coverage (industry median).

What we found

After 6 months: Cohort A median rating moved from 4.2 to 4.5. Cohort B median rating moved from 4.2 to 4.3. Map ranking position improved for 71% of Cohort A vs 38% of Cohort B in matched-radius searches.

Quality vs speed trade-off

The teams that saw the biggest gains used AI for the draft, human for the final pass — never raw AI output, never raw manual replies. Speed without quality lost trust; quality without speed lost coverage.

Does Google detect AI?

We saw no evidence of penalization. Google's spam guidelines target review fraud — not reply tooling. As long as the reply is genuine and accurate (not the same canned response on every review), the AI source is not flagged.

Recommendation

Use AI for the draft. Always pass it through a human. Pin tone to a brand voice document so replies don't feel templated. Reply to 95%+ of reviews within 24 hours. That combination beat manual on every metric in our test.
